CALL filed brief with U.S. Supreme Court in support of Coach Kennedy's right to pray

Bishop Derek Jones, Executive Director of Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty (CALL), was in Washington D.C. to join others who provided amicus curiae (“Friend of the Court”) briefs to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. “Chaplain Alliance was part of a larger united effort of First Liberty Institute to ensure SCOTUS had little room to maneuver out of anything other than supporting Religious Freedom!” said Bishop Jones. “This case has huge ramifications on all government employees – including military chaplains. This is why we became involved!” CALL worked with Arnold & Porter in writing and presenting their position to SCOTUS. Arnold & Porter is arguably the most prestigious and largest law firm in the world, both in terms of revenue and number of lawyers. You can read CALL’s amicus brief here.

Others who joined Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty in filing court briefs included NFL players such as Darrel Green, Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles, 56 members of Congress, 27 state attorneys general, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the Jewish Coalition for Religious Liberty just to name a few. “Just in sheer volume, the number of amici submitted in this case makes clear that this nation still cares about Religious Freedom,” said Michael Berry, First Liberty’s Director of Military Affairs.

CALL was represented by Bishop Jones at a small private reception hosted by First Liberty that followed oral arguments earlier in the morning on April 25.  The SCOTUS is expected to release its decision sometime in June.
