Navy makes the right call on Bibles in Navy lodges
WASHINGTON — Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty is commending the Navy for its decision to allow Bibles to remain in Navy lodges and guest quarters for the time being. Navy officials announced Thursday that Bibles would remain while the policy on religious materials in guest quarters is reviewed.
“If chaplains can be in the military, Bibles at no expense to the Navy can be in Navy lodges. Although we certainly commend the Navy for allowing those Bibles to remain, we remind Navy officials that there is really nothing further to review,” said Chaplain (COL) Ron Crews, USA retired, executive director of Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. “Our nation has a history of religious accommodation for military personnel since George Washington established the chaplain corps in July 1775. Allowing Bibles in guest quarters is a continuation of our desire to serve those who serve us.”
“It should be obvious by now that the American people want religious freedom in the military to be upheld,” Crews added. “There are some in the current administration who do not seem to understand this. We sincerely trust that this will be the last time the Navy gives in to any demand that it trample on the religious freedom of the men and women who serve this country.”
Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty is an organization of chaplain endorsers, the faith groups that provide chaplains for the U.S. military and other agencies needing chaplains. The endorsers in Chaplain Alliance speak for more than 2,600 chaplains serving the Armed Forces.
